Surface Engineering

Surface engineering is both scientific and technical discipline that deals with the production, examination and application of surface layers. Various traditional and innovative surface treatment processes (modification and/or coating) generate a surface layer/base material system with properties that guarantee the required performance at acceptable cost.

Often, one surface engineering procedure may not be sufficient for solving the problem, and in that case two or more operations (known as duplex procedure) would be utilized, first to improve certain properties of existing surfaces, ensuring better properties of the work piece in general after coating it with the final layer.

The following properties can be achieved by the above mentioned processes:

  • High Vickers hardness (well above 1000 HV)
  • Great wear resistance (abrasive, adhesive, erosive, tribocorrosive...)
  • Resistance to high temperatures
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Decorative appearance...
